- With the zerks on metal that is too thin or are just pressed in, my brother
- and I came up with a really good fix. Most zerks are about 1/4 20 thread
- size. We drill the tubes to something a little bigger than 1/4 then take
- a small 1/4 20 nut. Using a little wire feed mig I have, we weld the little
- nut to the tub. Voola, you now can thread a zerk in. This works VERY
- well and can even be done with an arc welder if you are very carefull not
- to burn through.
-
- As for the speedo housing, we learned of the zerk at a race siminar. You
- take the housing off the machine and pop the outer bearing seal off the
- bearing. Drill and zerk the housing and then replace it. A few pumps of
- grease every few rides keeps moisture from getting into the bearing and
- keeps it fully lubed. This does prolong the life of the bearing, and I
- believe the new sleds this year, atleast the liquid Indy's have this
- zerk already in place.
-
- I picked up a ton of great ideas to improve the life if not the actual
- performance of my Indy at the race siminar. Admittedly, some of the
- stuff was of no use to me as a Non-racer, but a surprising amount will
- apply to the trail as well.
