- At an office I worked at we had four phone lines and a com line that
- could buzz other offices. The initial shenanigan was to buzz someone's
- office, and when they picked up say "Wind" and then hang up. Usually they
- *thought* they knew who it was and promply "Winded" them back.
-
- When people started getting wise, the routine became to call through the
- secretary which made it seem like an outside call. Once a guy was on the
- phone with a possible new employer, got a second call and hung up on the
- first call by mistake. The second call was only one word long...
-
- It got interesting when people started moving to other jobs. "Wind" calls
- were cheap, quick, and let the person know they weren't forgotten.
-
- The all time classic was a long distance one to Denver. "Tom" and "Joe" were
- former Winders that had moved to the same office there. "Betty" was Joe's
- semi-secret girlfriend that had also moved on from our office. We Winded
- Tom, and he said "Wait, wait! Betty is visiting Joe right now - get her."
- He gave us Joe's home number and said she was there.
-
- I'm sure she still doesn't know how we caught her.
