- San Franscisco is a fascinating city to listen to in the early evening. One
- time when I went up with a friend, while he drove I programmed in police
- frequencies into the scanner. One of the lists of channels said there were
- several channels with several hundred licensed transmitters on each. I
- think these are for things like foot patrols, etc. On the evening I was
- listening I was on the other side of the Golden Gate bridge, looking over
- the water at the city, and monitoring what was going on. It was pure
- bedlam on the channels. Police talking over the top of each other, the
- dispatchers having trouble maintaining order on the frequencies, etc. It
- sounded like they were tryng to close down various foot patrol beats.

- Later that night, after a tour of Alcatraz and we were trying to find
- one of the train stations to get back to Daly City, (where our car was
- parked), we were listening to what sounded like some sort of manhunt, and
- as far as we could tell from street names, it didn't sound like it was
- very far away from us, eventhough we saw no activity that looked like
- what we were hearing about.
