  14. San Franscisco is a fascinating city to listen to in the early evening. One
  15. time when I went up with a friend, while he drove I programmed in police
  16. frequencies into the scanner. One of the lists of channels said there were
  17. several channels with several hundred licensed transmitters on each. I
  18. think these are for things like foot patrols, etc. On the evening I was
  19. listening I was on the other side of the Golden Gate bridge, looking over
  20. the water at the city, and monitoring what was going on. It was pure
  21. bedlam on the channels. Police talking over the top of each other, the
  22. dispatchers having trouble maintaining order on the frequencies, etc. It
  23. sounded like they were tryng to close down various foot patrol beats.

  25. Later that night, after a tour of Alcatraz and we were trying to find 
  26. one of the train stations to get back to Daly City, (where our car was
  27. parked), we were listening to what sounded like some sort of manhunt, and
  28. as far as we could tell from street names, it didn't sound like it was 
  29. very far away from us, eventhough we saw no activity that looked like
  30. what we were hearing about.
