- CTCSS is a subaudible tone used by many radio systems as a sort of safeguard
- for the systems (also known as PL or "private line" in certain circles). these
- tones are transmitted from the time the radio microphone is keyed to the point
- of unkey of the microphone. these tones are mostly inbetween the 67.0Hz to
- 250.3Hz range, and on most radios are undetectable or unnoticeable because the
- radios aren't designed to reproduce audio at those low frequencies. they
- filter them out and use them for CTCSS information.
-
- The tones can be thought of as different "keys" to unlock different doors.
- let's say you have two businesses that share a frequency. since the businesses
- don't want to hear each other's radio traffic, and only their own, they use
- CTCSS as a code key for private operation. one business operates on 151.625MHz
- with 103.5Hz as their CTCSS tone. The other business operates on the same
- frequency, but their tone is 162.2Hz. While your scanner picks up both of
- these businesses, and it may sound sometimes like they are talking over each
- other, they are completely unaware of each other's conversations because each
- of their radios listens for the proper CTCSS tones. I have the same scanner as
- you, and I added the CTCSS board because we have multiple users in the bay area
- (San francisco, san jose...) that share radio channels.
- Other reasons for the use of CTCSS tones are to activate repeaters and certain
- links and the like. Most commercial repeater systems (police, fire, medical,
- municipal) won't activate or be keyed by someone who can transmit on their
- input frequency, unless that person is also transmitting the proper CTCSS tone
- on their radio.
-
- Having a CTCSS board can greatly reduce the interference you receive in most
- cases from bleed over from a nearby channel etc.,. There are several 300 watt
- paging transmitters in san jose that bleed over most of the police and fire
- channels i monitor, but they are almost completely blanked out when the CTCSS
- board is used. The unit can save you headaches, yet give you headaches if you
- install it and don't know the tones for the frequencies in use in your area.
- it's about $50 and just plugs in.
