  26. Don't get me wrong... I am a scanner enthusiast of the highest degree,
  27. so I wouldn't discuss anything confidential via cellular phone. Yet the
  28. vast majority of citizens in this country don't realize that many toll
  29. and long distance calls are being transmitted via radio links. Whether
  30. by satellite or by microwave, there are people with the smarts and
  31. equipment to de-multiplex and listen to these channels. By your standard
  32. these transmissions are fair game because they are not encrypted.

  34. The law was designed primarily to protect YOU from being monitored by
  35. law enforcement agencies without a hard to obtain wiretap order. The
  36. scanner user community is their own worst enemy in this regard. Calling
  37. national media attention to the fact that cellular is easily monitored
  38. is really stupid and does more to hurt the image of the radio enthusiast
  39. than anything else. Are we a bunch of busybodies who want to eavesdrop
  40. on phone calls? Maybe we're only creeps who get off listening to the
  41. neighbors' baby monitor? (That's legal...) Sorry, I find your position
  42. indefensible and so do the majority of lawmakers (who tend to use
  43. cellular more than almost anyone).
