- what you're hearing is most likely what we call out here in california a
- "stat-alert" or status alert button. These are short data bursts that match
- the descriptions you have given. The local fire department (san jose) and
- county ambulances (medevac, santa clara county) use them to replicate some of
- the most common place transmissions (in service, out of service, on scene,
- enroute, completed assignment...). the radios they use just have an attacment
- to them of a bank of buttons (newer radios have the buttons built in) that are
- marked with the uses, and the user just hits one of them. the dispatcher sees
- the data converted on his/her screen to normal text, and they respond to it. a
- typical data burst contains the unit id#, and the information being sent.
