- Just a short note in response to Kate's question of whether others have
- also had to VERY slowly build up to exercise and hitting blocks where you
- can't seem to do more. I decided to try walking about 2 years ago just
- to get some kind of exercise. I started being able to do all of about 2
- minutes, really -- I actually began by just walking around the perimeter
- of my yard, and I live in a city neighborhood, so we are not talking acres
- here. If I did more, I got weak, tired, etc. I moved up to walking across
- the street and maybe 2 houses down over a period of about a month. Increasing
- at about that rate, I am now up to 15 to 20 minute walks usually twice a day.

- But, I did spend months sometimes with no increase. I found out early that
- doing too much more just set me way back -- in bed for a few days, extra
- weak, etc. -- as many people have mentioned. I then decided not to push it
- at all. On days (or even weeks) when I don't feel up to it, I do only 5
- minute walks or simply skip the whole thing.

- A few things that have helped me walk more: Walking with my dog rather
- than on my own (he only weighs 20 pounds but he can really pull that leash,
- and every so often I just coast along!); walking with a friend (who understands
- my limits), for the company; skipping walks in heat/humidity (which makes
- me weak in and of itself, and is really draining for me if combined with
- exercise); walking only at my "peak" times in a day, never just after a get
- up and never when hungry; resting when I come back (at least sitting down
- for 10 minutes) rather than moving into some other task (mental or physical).
