- Among our people, before we were conquered by the Europeans, gay men held
- a special status, as it was thought that they possessed very powerful
- medicine. Among the Sioux, the clan's berdiche, or "effiminate man" (I
- can't remember the Lakota word, but I'll post it as soon as it comes back) was
- the official "child-namer" of the clan, and many sacred dances were held
- to honor them. Any affront to one of them at one of these dances brought
- down instant reprisal from the warriors present. Needless to say, you
- didn't make the berdiche mad.
-
- This tolerance for gay people (I'm not sure about the number of
- pre-Contact lesbians, but there are stories of female warriors) seems to
- be yet another casualty of the White man's onslaught against our culture.
- Too few young people know these things, and perhaps do not want to
- learn because such beliefs are diametrically opposed to the prevalent
- belief/"value" system in which we live.
-
- Perhaps I cannot fully understand what it is to be gay, but I can "live and
- let live". This is the way the Creator would want it to be.
-
- Just my 2 cents' worth.
