  23. I would say that his character has a "tragic flaw" -- it is not so much
  24. that he is good or evil -- but that he has a weakness he does not
  25. recognize and guard against.

  27. (I am also reminded of someone's comment that Tolkin wrote characters
  28. who were architypes of different sides of the personality.)
