- Yes, it is well worth reading. It took me three tries to get all the details
- together and understand the relationships. The _Sillmarillion_ (the book) is a
- collection of four great books of lore, probably taken from the Red Book of the
- Westmarch, and comprising many of the "Translations from the Elvish" that Bilbo
- and Frodo compiled. It includes the Elves' creation myth, their own origins,
- departure from and return to Middle-Earth, and all of their history during the
- First Age (the Lord of the Rings takes place at the end of the Third Age). The
- book also includes some information about the Numenoreans and their downfall.
-
- If you get through the _Silmarillion_, there are nine volumes of "The History
- of Middle Earth," in which Christopher Tolkien has collected and annotated his
- fathers writings, drafts, different versions, and so on, regarding the elves
- and Middle Earth in general.
