- I think this is a terrible idea. Even if it was legal, taking an
- excerpt of a Shostakovich symphony does nothing. They are the best
- because they work together so well, not because they have the
- catchiest tunes, or the best individual theme development, or even the
- best orchestration (though here the quality is really high). This is
- doubly true for the string quartets. And i'm not sure taking
- individual shorter work (one or two of the preludes and fugues for
- example) really will give someone an idea of the sound of
- Shostakovich's music. That is heavily involved in the way he handles
- voicing during the slow movements of orchestral pieces, and the
- handling of recapitulations.
