-
- Please illustrate other examples of conservatives pointing fingers at fictional
- characters. The statement aappears to be a "generalization."
-
- What killed the 50's style family
- >was the increased amount of choice that has been given to women in
- >areas ranging from careers, to family choices, to reproductive
- >choices.
- > When women (I should say white, middle-class women, because

- >the work force the family was never going to be the same. And the 50's
- >attempt to force women who had tasted independence back into the
- >kitchen didn't work. Nowaday's a woman doesn't HAVE to depend on a
- >man for anything - food, shelter, even to have children (thanks to the
- >advent of sperm banks). So what incentive does the traditional family
- >offer? And how can we entice women back into this fold?
-
- 1) Just *how* did the 50s "attempt to force" women into the kitchen??? The 50s
- were a period of relative prosperity, esp. in the U.S. If women were
- returning to "the kitchen", it was in response to the *economic* context--not
- to the "50s attempt to force women into the kitchen."
-
- 2) I agree that women do not need to depend on men for shelter, food, etc.
- HOWEVER--men need women for certain things AND vice-versa. The traditional
- family offers the truest, best source of "ethics" education, a place of
- nurturing, a place of emotional stability. I AM NOT SAYING NOR INFERRING
- SINGLE PARENT HOUSEHOLDS DO NOT OFFER THESE THINGS. I do suggest, however, that
- there is strong correlation between the breakdown of the traditional family
- unit and certain societal ills experienced by the U.S. today (e.g. teen
- pregnancies, etc.)
