- (From an interview with Lee Jones):
-
- Q: Could you tell us more about this song?
-
- Me: Sure. This song was written by Warren Zevon. You need to understand
- where he's coming from - he's written other classics such as "Roland the
- Headless Thompson Gunner" (about a mercenary who gets his head shot off and
- comes back for revenge); "Werewolves of London" (... I saw a werewolf
- drinking a Pina Colada at Trader Vic's - and his hair was perfect...); and
- "Lawyers, Guns, and Money" (... I went home with a waitress, the way I
- always do. How was I to know, she was with the Russians too....)
-
- Q: Are you making any of this up?
-
- Me: No.
-
- Q: Are his songs always this weird?
-
- Me:
- Warren pretty much has his tongue firmly implanted in cheek in most of
- his songs. "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" is in the same class - if you hear him
- sing it, you'll understand it's *supposed* to be funny. I've always
- wondered if Linda was in on the joke or what, but she and Warren are good
- buds so I assume she knew what she was doing....
-
- Q: Are you done now?
-
- Me: Yes.
