-
- On the contrary: part of that ideal, paradigm if you will, is that the woman
- supports her _family_ in whatever capacity necessary. Sometimes that is
- "being there" for the kids (and baking cookies so that the kids will be happy
- and/or play around the house (where mom cna support them)). Sometimes it
- means talking to the husband about his horrible work day. And always supporting
- that husband for his every career move.
-
- When I hear Marilyn Quayle and Barbara Bush supporters talk, they mention all
- of these things as good things to do. My paragraphs here are not an endorsement,
- just a summary of all the things involved in this same idea.
-
- So, if you were to ask Mrs. Quayle about her hypocrisy, she would probably
- tell you that she sees supporting her husband as consistent with women's true
- nature.
-
- Somewhat on this same subject, _Working Women_ magazine has a "Hall of Shame"
- feature that they run every year at this time. Marilyn and Barbara were
- pictured as part of the item about the new Super-Villan: if you thought
- Willie Horton was scary, watch out! Here comes: Careerwoman! The item went
- on to touch on how having a career for a woman was an "out" thing, citing
- Hillary Clinton's change in wardrobe, Marilyn Quayle's speech, and the fact
- that Barbara Bush attributed her (Barbara's) participation in teh campaign
- as "just going about my own dumb way, trying to help out" (I may not have
- the quote right). The article also inducts Our Boy into the Hall for saying
- that Murphy Brown mocks the importance of fathers. (Thus, Lisa slips in
- an OBDQ reference, increasingly rare on this group :)
