- And no smiley! Perhaps assuming that the original posting was serious
- is in error, but as Luther said, "Sin boldly, but trust God more boldly
- still!"
-
- Jason,
-
- As far as I know, Islam and Mormon are the only major religions in the
- west that view the drinking of alcohol for pleasure as intrisically
- sinful (no slight intended if I have missed your personal dry
- religion!), yet the overwhelming majority of the ethical police on the
- net are Christian. I assume for this reason that you are Christian.
-
- It would be remarkable for any *Christian* to oppose the consumption of
- alcoholic beverages for pleasure. Jesus himself not only consumed
- alcoholic beverages for pleasure (cf. Luke 7:31-35), but is reported to
- have miraculously converted water to wine at the wedding at Cana (cf.
- John 2:1-11). So, assuming that you are Christian, you are
- (1) denying the validity of the Gospel testamony concerning Jesus; and/or
- (2) asserting that Jesus was sinful.
- To the best of my knowledge, all manifestations of Christianity likely
- to produce ethical police would view either of these propositions as
- anathema.
-
- Alcohol, like sex, food, and friends, are all gifts of a loving God.
- We can enjoy these gifts responsibly, or abuse them as we choose.
- Clearly abusing God's gifts is sinful, but is not also sinful to deny
- the giver?
-
- Peace,
-
