  20. How in the heck is it that people can manage to get fish to the point of
  21. spawing and then kill the biofilter on them?!? Do you have the vaguest
  22. clue what you have done? A massive bacterial die off is now in progress
  23. in your tank; If it doesn't kill the adult fish you may consider yourself
  24. lucky. Not only is the biofilter not filtering, it is now contributing
  25. large amounts of dead nitrogenous waste to your tank.

  27. For now: remove the dying gravel. Ideally, move the fish into a tank with
  28. a functioning biofilter. If none, change water. Put in a couple of sponge
  29. filters. Pray. Change water. Pray. Repeat. You have just set your filtration
  30. back to that of a new, unconditioned tank. You might just as well pull the
  31. UG plates while you are stripping the gravel out. A bare tank with sponge
  32. filters is a pretty good spawing envronment for many fish. Some prefer
  33. a rock, such as a piece of slate, to spawn on. Had you not killed your UGF,
  34. you could have put a piece of slate above the gravel and avoided this whole
  35. mess.
