- I would like to second this. Having had a relative with Parkinson's,
- I was concerned that my hand tremor might be that and as progressive.
- An internist (later confirmed by a neurologist) diagnosed it as the
- usually less serious essential tremor (aka benign familial tremor),
- which is treatable but with different meds.
-
- Since then I've encountered a number of people who were afraid to
- ask their physicians about it. I'm fortunate that I did, because
- the occasional use of meds in high stress situations very much
- reduces the tremor. Before, the tremor just added to the stress. :-)
- A few people -- who would never think to comment on someone's
- artificial limb or accident scars -- didn't hesitate to exclaim
- something loudly about my hand shaking. :-(
-
- By the way, Katherine Hepburn appeared in a Lifetime (cable channel)
- segment on essential tremor a while back, countering the (incorrect)
- rumor about her having Parkinson's. In her case, the essential
- tremor affects her neck/head quite a bit; neck/head and hands are
- the most common sites, but occasionally other parts of the body
- are affected.
