- My recollection of the NPR report was that
-
- 1) The woman explicitly "challenged" the ruling by announcing
- her intention to the authorities (FDA? DEA?), when she
- could have just brought in her personal supply without
- incident. The agency picked up the gauntlet. And the drugs.
-
- 2) The courts upheld the confiscation, since the law includes
- language to the effect that there is "accepted alternative"
- to the proscribed drug (i.e., she could have had a traditional
- "surgical" abortion to address her medical needs).
-
- From this I cannot tell whether the FDA would just as soon turn a
- blind eye on smuggling RU-486 for personal use, or would be especially
- "paternalistic" about an abortifacent.
-
- Are there any companies actually seeking FDA approval for RU-486
- (i.e., in the face of potential boycotts)? (Or is "R-U" the only
- company that can make it?)
-
- >Argh!

- I'm well past "Argh!" and well into "Sigh..."
