- I feel lucky I never seriously zapped myself or anyone else at some
- science fairs in the late '60s. I rigged up a Jacob's Ladder from
- a neon sign transformer ($10, used, in 1968, probably more now) and
- then studied the rf emissions when the arc was in a 2000 gauss
- magnetic field (from a giant magnet bought for $20 in 1967 from
- Edmund Scientific...ahh, the good old days).
-
- I had no special shielding around the setup, even at the public
- science fairs. In those days we considered electrocutions of
- bystanders to be "evolution in action."
-
- Seriously, I wonder just how OSHA and liability suits have affected
- things like science fairs? Are the kids discouraged from building
- the high-voltage gadgets that used to be so common at science fairs
- in the past? I remember cyclotrons, plasma torches, and scads of
- spark generators.
-
- I will say I got a few serious scares whe experimenting, and
- knowing what I know now, I'd be much more careful.
