  29. I feel lucky I never seriously zapped myself or anyone else at some
  30. science fairs in the late '60s. I rigged up a Jacob's Ladder from
  31. a neon sign transformer ($10, used, in 1968, probably more now) and
  32. then studied the rf emissions when the arc was in a 2000 gauss 
  33. magnetic field (from a giant magnet bought for $20 in 1967 from 
  34. Edmund Scientific...ahh, the good old days).

  36. I had no special shielding around the setup, even at the public
  37. science fairs. In those days we considered electrocutions of 
  38. bystanders to be "evolution in action."

  40. Seriously, I wonder just how OSHA and liability suits have affected
  41. things like science fairs? Are the kids discouraged from building
  42. the high-voltage gadgets that used to be so common at science fairs
  43. in the past? I remember cyclotrons, plasma torches, and scads of 
  44. spark generators.

  46. I will say I got a few serious scares whe experimenting, and
  47. knowing what I know now, I'd be much more careful.
