- I am aware of research on aquatic ecosystems in sealed flasks that was
- conducted by Dr. Clair Folsome and his students at the University of
- Hawaii. A good summary of their work is presented in:
-
- C.E. Folsome and J.A. Hanson. 1986. The emergence of materially-
- closed-system ecology. Pages 269-288 in N. Polunin (ed.),
- Ecosystem Theory and Application, John Wiley & Sons, New York.
-
- They claim to have established "that materially-closed but energetically-
- open ecosystems in the 100 to 5,000 ml range can persist for tens of
- years, and perhaps even indefinitely." Unfortunately, Dr. Folsome died
- a few years ago, but perhaps some of his colleagues have continued the
- research. A few other scientists have dabbled in the area of sealed-flask
- ecosystems. References to their work can be found in the Folsome and
- Hanson paper cited above.
