- Our '87 Celebrity wagon has been giving me fits on the freeway; when we try to
- accelerate from 50-55 for passing, or give it additional gas to make the
- upslope of a hill, it bogs down, autoshifting down occassionally into 2nd.a
- Engine RPM will fall off, and we'll get plenty of black exhaust, until we're
- in the worst case in first gear.
-
- The engine, yes, is only the 2.3L 4-cylinder, but loads of the Celebrities
- have them, and we've had four trouble-free years where this problem never
- presented itself with typical loads.
-
- As this is (a) somewhat rare, and (b) seems to require a hot day, and (c) a long
- freeway climb, and (d) the Fates to smile on us, I've yet to be able to
- reproduce the situation for my mechanic.
-
- Anyone else seen this?
-
- And has anyone out there done a swap of the 2.8L turbocharged 6-cylinder for
- one of these (I love the whine as the turbo kicks in!)??
