- In many '70's Toyotas there was a similar plastic shield. If there's moisture
- in the cap, the coil current that's supposed to go to ground via the pointed-to
- distributor cap tower (and out thru the wire to the plug) would go via the
- nearest unshielded distributor component - the points, distributor housing,
- etc.

- We replaced them religiously - cars rarely have unnecessary pieces (other than
- appearance-only items, anyway.) And another feature in those Toyotas was a
- coil cover that shielded the distributor and ignition-switch leads from
- engine/road spray; when *I* got in a rush and left the shield off my '76
- Corolla after a quick points adjustment, *I* paid with a roadside stall
- in a rainshower...
