  27. In many '70's Toyotas there was a similar plastic shield. If there's moisture
  28. in the cap, the coil current that's supposed to go to ground via the pointed-to
  29. distributor cap tower (and out thru the wire to the plug) would go via the 
  30. nearest unshielded distributor component - the points, distributor housing,
  31. etc.

  33. We replaced them religiously - cars rarely have unnecessary pieces (other than
  34. appearance-only items, anyway.)  And another feature in those Toyotas was a
  35. coil cover that shielded the distributor and ignition-switch leads from
  36. engine/road spray; when *I* got in a rush and left the shield off my '76
  37. Corolla after a quick points adjustment, *I* paid with a roadside stall 
  38. in a rainshower...
