  22. hard and have to shift more slowly.  This may cost me a half second or
  23. so but will spare my transmission.

  25. By the way, in my original post, I forgot to mention the age of the
  26. car.  It is a 1987, with 88,000 miles on it.  I bought it about a year
  27. and three months ago, when it had 68,000 miles on it.

  29. My mechanic says that the Saab 9000 line is the result of collaboration
  30. between Saab, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo.  He says that the transmission is
  31. from Lancia.  Is this stuff true?  If so, the advice that applies to
  32. the 900 transmission could be totally inapplicable.

  34. $ A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to put a few hundred miles on a '92
  35. $ 9000S with the 4-speed automatic (and the 2.3L engine, normally-aspirated).
  36. $ It is quite slow off the line (miserable, in fact, with the A/C on), but 
  37. $ once under way, the transmission/engine combination is pretty nice. But
  38. $ expect only 20-21 mpg overall, maybe 26-27 on the freeway.

  40. Slow is a relative word and what is fast to some is slow to others.  My
  41. view is that my Saab's acceleration isn't really that bad, but it takes
  42. a lot of driver effort to get what you want.  Maybe the automatic
  43. transmission makes things a lot worse.

  45. Mine has the 2.0l engine.  I wonder why this new Saab gets such bad
  46. mileage.  Mine gets 29 mpg overall!
