- $ [problems with 900S transmission]
-
- $ Anyway, I know the 9000 has different transmission, but perhaps a similar
- $ design idiosyncracy in this regard. That is disappointing. I would advise
- $ avoiding any shifting that causes grinding, obviously it will catch up with
- $ your wallet in the long run (it did with me)!
-
- Thanks to many of you who advised me. I am just pushing my car too
- hard and have to shift more slowly. This may cost me a half second or
- so but will spare my transmission.
-
- By the way, in my original post, I forgot to mention the age of the
- car. It is a 1987, with 88,000 miles on it. I bought it about a year
- and three months ago, when it had 68,000 miles on it.
-
- My mechanic says that the Saab 9000 line is the result of collaboration
- between Saab, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo. He says that the transmission is
- from Lancia. Is this stuff true? If so, the advice that applies to
- the 900 transmission could be totally inapplicable.
-
- $ A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to put a few hundred miles on a '92
- $ 9000S with the 4-speed automatic (and the 2.3L engine, normally-aspirated).
- $ It is quite slow off the line (miserable, in fact, with the A/C on), but
- $ once under way, the transmission/engine combination is pretty nice. But
- $ expect only 20-21 mpg overall, maybe 26-27 on the freeway.
-
- Slow is a relative word and what is fast to some is slow to others. My
- view is that my Saab's acceleration isn't really that bad, but it takes
- a lot of driver effort to get what you want. Maybe the automatic
- transmission makes things a lot worse.
-
- Mine has the 2.0l engine. I wonder why this new Saab gets such bad
- mileage. Mine gets 29 mpg overall!
