- I have an '88 MR2 (naturally aspirated), stock except for a TRD (nee HKS)
- muffler system (hi-flow muffler with resonator replacing the cat. converter)
- and a K & N air filter. The problem that I continue to have is the the idle
- is usually rough and unsteady and, at speed, I am getting a lot of
- detonation on acceleration, but not all the time. I now have 64,000 miles
- on the car and had the timing belt replaced at 55,000 and the whole thing
- re-timed with little lasting change in performance. The car will act as
- though it is missing below 1000 rpm but seems to smooth out above that
- somewhat. I would expect a rough idle if the car was cammed accordingly,
- but it is stock with the exception of the items it previously mentioned. I
- am confused and frustrated. I have changed plugs up and down in the heat
- range to try to cure the problem, changed plug leads, air filter, etc,
- etc.. I even talked to the good folks at TRD to see if the addition of the
- free breathing gear I put on there would have an effect on the flow sensor
- and the mixture computer. They said it would not affect anything
- appreciably. Ergo, I am back at square one. HELP!! Any ideas would be
- greatly appreciated.
