  13. The job that stunted my writing more than any other was chief copy
  14. editor of a magazine.  Every time I sat down to actually write
  15. something, I froze up.  Each sentence had to be grammatically
  16. correct, punctuation perfect, spelling flawless.  That's no way
  17. to write, not at the first-draft stage.  I just couldn't turn the
  18. copy editor off at night when I wanted to write.  I couldn't even
  19. turn it off when I sat down to read a book, article, whatever.  
  20. It's a great job for losing friends, too:  "Shouldn't that be
  21. _more than_ six items, not _over_ six items?"
