-
- Making a computer talk to a TTY is two-part problem. The computer
- uses the ASCII code and the TTY uses Baudot. The TTY also uses
- 45.45 baud, which is standard for TTYs and teleprinters but not for
- computers. Both these things can be taken care of in software.
- The real problem comes, as George points out, from the
- incompatibility of a TTY/TDD with a standard ASCII modem.
-
- TDD modems are available from a number of sources. Besides the one
- George mentioned, you can get them from Phone-TTY, Krown and
- Ultratech. For a list of model numbers and sources download the
- file COMPARE.TTY from area two on the HEX.
-
- If you happen to have an original IBM-PC or a PCjr, or a Radio
- Shack Color Computer, you don't need a modem at all. Software is
- available (also on HEX) that will use the computer's cassette port
- to generate and receive modem tones.
-
- If you're technically inclined you can modify an old Bell-103 type
- (300 baud) ASCII modem to the TTY tones. The HEX BBS used such a
- modem for years to answer TTY calls before commercial products were
- available. It now uses a Phone-TTY model CM-4.
