- WASHINGTON, July 29 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Following is the statement
- of AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland on the International Brotherhood
- of Teamsters' opposition to a petition filed in "U.S. vs. IBT" by the
- Justice Department to continue and increase the government's control
- over Teamster affairs:
-
- "In a democratic society, the government cannot be allowed
- to control a trade union. The government-supervised, membership
- election of Ron Carey ended the last excuse for making the
- International Brotherhood of Teamsters an exception to that rule.
- "The AFL-CIO, on behalf of all its affiliates, supports the
- Teamster's efforts to stop the government from expanding its role in
- the union's internal affairs. The government has both a legal and
- moral obligation to honor its pledge in the "U.S. vs. IBT" consent
- decree to begin the process of reducing its role in the union's
- affairs. We stand ready to assist the Teamsters in any court test of
- their right to retain their autonomy.
- "It is time -- it is long past time -- to return this great
- union to its members and to their legitimate representatives:
- the IBT's democratically elected officers."
