  22.                LEGISLATION ON THE HORIZON TO PROTECT
  23.                    MT. GRAHAM  -- IF YOU ACT NOW!

  25. Friends of Mt. Graham and the San Carlos Tribal Council have
  26. been active in Washington, DC asking members of Congress to help
  27. halt the telescope project and to protect our mountain.  The
  28. Reasons for doing so are myriad.  As a biological sky-island Mt.
  29. Graham is unparalleled.  As the birthplace of San Carlos Apache
  30. heritage, culture and religion, Dzil nchaa si an (Mt. Graham)
  31. is most important.  As a chance to reverse important breeches
  32. in our environmental and cultural protection laws, the fight
  33. to protect Mt. Graham is crucial.  What was undone in the
  34. University of Arizona's attempt to erect a Tower Of Babel on
  35. Mt. Graham, must be corrected.

  37. We have friends in the 102nd Congress in Washington.  Several
  38. Members have expressed interest in legislation to protect Mt.
  39. Graham.  Currently, the lead person in this growing movement in
  40. Congress is Jim Jontz, from Indiana.  Mr.  Jontz is willing to
  41. sponsor a bill to correct the errors inherent in Title VI of
  42. the Arizona-Idaho Conservation Act (the rider that mandated the
  43. first three telescopes on Mt. Graham and exempts the projects
  44. from numerous laws).  However, he will need the support of other
  45. members of the Interior Committee.
  46.  
  47. You can play a key role in the introduction and passing of this
  48. legislation by calling or writing the nearest Congressperson on
  49. the Interior committee.  You could also make a difference by
  50. calling or writing your elected official, asking them to co-
  51. sponsor this legislation.
