- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- This is a hodge-podge list of resources that can help those
- interested in doing something to help the environment.
-
- This information is compiled from "50 Simple Things You Can Do
- to Save the Earth" and "The Next Step: 50 More Things You Can
- Do to Save the Earth", both available at bookstores and by
- mail order (bulk rates available) at their publisher,
-
- EarthWorks Press #25
- 1400 Shattuck Ave.
- Berkeley, CA 94709.

- Junk mail kills 100 million trees a year. You can help reduce
- junk mail to your home by writing to the Mail Preference
- Service and asking them to stop your name from being sold
- to large mailinglist companies:
-
- Mail Preference Service
- Direct Marketing Association
- 11 West 42nd St.
- PO Box 3861
- New York, NY 10163-3861.
-
- Also, be sure to tell companies you order from, and non
- profit organizations you donate to, that you do NOT
- want your name sold to other companies or organizations.
-
-
- You can use checks or credit cards that support
- the environment or animal rights. A percentage of
- the money you spend on your credit card would go
- to the organization of your choice. For more
- information, consult "The Next Step: 50 More Things
- You Can do to Save the Earth" or write one of the
- following three addresses
-
- Message! Check Corp.
- 911 East Pike
- PO Box 3206-GB
- Seattle, WA 98114
- (selection of checks available from various environmental
- organizations. These "message checks" can be used with
- any bank)
-
- VISA Corporate Relations
- PO Box 8999
- San Francisco, CA 94128
- Attn: Environmental Affinity Card List
- (send for list of 50+ ecology and animal
- protection groups. Include a SASE)
-
- MasterCard International
- Attn: STephen Drees
- 888 7th Ave.
- 22nd Floor
- NYC, NY 100106
- (ask for list of environmental affinity
- cards. include SASE)
-
-
- One way to save the environment is by driving less.
- One way to avoid using the car is by dusting off that
- old bicycle sitting in the garage and using it as
- transportation. But that's no good if there aren't
- any good bike paths you can use between your homes
- and the places you go to the most often, e.g. work.
-
- If you're interested in biking as a way of reducing
- reliance on driving, consult one of the following
- three resources:
-
- Pro Bike Directory
- Bicycle Federation of America
- 1818 R Street NW
- Washington DC 20009
- (has fact sheets, info on becoming active on local
- level. Send SASE. Also has $15 program for
- individuals, organizations and government agencies)
-
- Bicycle USA Almanac
- League of American Wheelmen
- 6707 Whitestone Rd.
- Suite 209
- Baltimore, MD 21207
- (301) 944-3399 [the existence of a TDD line for
- deaf, hard of hearing and speech impaired people
- is not mentioned]
- ($25/yr membership gets you copies of Bicycle USA.
- List of bicycling organizations also available)
-
- "Bicycle Legislation in U.S. Cities"
- Local Solutions to Global Pollution
- 2121 Bonar St. Studio A
- Berkeley, CA 94702
- ($7 packet of bicycle programs and policies in
- various cities)
-
-
- One way to keep unwanted items out of the local
- landfill is by attending yard sales, and holding
- some of your own.
-
- "The Next Step: 50 More things You Can Do to Save
- the Earth" says they could only find one source,
- a very "strange" book. What they mean by strange,
- I have no idea, and I have no idea how helpful
- this book is, but here goes:
-
- "Garage Sale Mania"
- Betterway Publications
- PO Box 219
- Crozen, VA 22932
- (804) 823-5661
- ($10.00)
