  27. san salvador, jul 14 (ips) -- the three members of the truth
  28. commission, in charge of investigating the most serious incidents
  29. of violence during the 12-year civil war that ended in january,
  30. have arrived in san salvador to begin their task.

  32. the commission, which includes former colombian president
  33. belisario betancourt, former venezuelan foreign minister reinaldo
  34. figueredo and a prominent us jurist, thomas burgenthal, was
  35. formally established in new york on monday by the united nations
  36. secretary general, dr boutros boutros-ghali.

  38. the arrival of the three-man inquiry team coincided with
  39. tuesday's announcement by el salvador's defence minister, emilio
  40. ponce, that the commission would not only investigate acts of
  41. violence attributed to the armed forces, but also acts of
  42. violence carried out by the guerrillas.

  44. joaquin villalobos, leader of the farabundo marti national
  45. liberation front (fmln), expressed concern at the scope of the
  46. commission's work, and warned that its members might be subjected
  47. to ''strong pressures'' from the country's right-wing elements.

  49. the former colombian president, belisario betancourt, told
  50. reporters that the a six-month time limit had been established
  51. for the commission's task.

  53. however, figueredo, venezuela's former foreign minister,
  54. stressed that ''we have not imposed limiting criteria on our
  55. work, and will be guided by the wishes of the salvadorean
  56. people.''

  58. hundreds of human rights activists and victims' relatives
  59. gathered at san salvador's airport to welcome the three
  60. commission members. they carried placards proclaiming ''the
  61. present requires truth and justice for the past'' and other
  62. slogans.

  64. among the cases to be investigated by the commission is the
  65. 1980 murder of san salvador's archbishop, arnulfo romero, and the
  66. 1989 slaying of six jesuit priests, as well as several massacres
  67. of civilians suspected of collaborating with the guerrillas.

  69. el salvador's bitter 12-year conflict is estimated to have
  70. claimed the lives of nearly 75,000 people, the majority of them
  71. civilians.

  73. according to the peace accords, signed by the government of
  74. president alfredo cristiani and the fmln on january 16, the truth
  75. commission will have six months to prepare a final report on its
  76. findings, which will be presented to un secretary general boutros
  77. boutros-ghali.

  86. the armed forces, composed of three salvadorean civilians, is due
  87. present its report in august.

  90. established by the peace accords are achieved, the guerrillas
  91. should have completed their disarmament and demobilisation
  92. process and a new national civilian police force should be
