- OK, so you're in charge of what goes in your /usr/bin/X11 directory.
- Beyond the standard "core" distribution, what are your essential
- X programs, without which a X site just isn't hip?
-
- Here's a list that I've just thrown together...
-
- (Most of these programs are available by anonymous ftp from export.lcs.mit.edu.)
-
- Major importance:
- xlogout (A simple Quit button, used at the bottom of my .xinitrc.)
- xarchie (Couldn't live without it. Use it to find these programs.)
- xdvi (First major reason for using a colour machine.)
- idraw (Worth the effort of finding a C++ compiler.)
- ghostscript (Means I don't have to use openwin.)
- ghostview (Makes ghostscript twice as useful.)
- ups (Don't debug without it!)
- ten (Editor with similar heritage to ups.)
-
- Other Big Ones:
- ppmplus (Not really an X program, but essential for xwd files.)
- xfig (I prefer idraw personally.)
- tvtwm (Waiting for the new version...)
- olvwm (Seems some people like Open Look!)
-
- Cool programs:
- xlock (With locking turned off, as some say it's anti-social.)
- xv (Simply awesome.)
- xloadimage (Simpler than xv, also can open diff. formats, e.g. urt.)
- dclock (Xt version has tons off neat features.)
- dclock (Interviews version looks nicer.)
- xmeter (Keeps me up to date with what going down.)
- xinfo (Maybe (l)emacs 19 will obsolete this.)
-
- Neat hacks:
- xfishtank (Running with fish borrowed from After Dark.)
- xantfarm (Not good for your eyes though.)
- xneko (Cute.)
- xphoon (Jef Poskanzer seems to appear a few times in this list.)
- Xaw3d (Gives a new lease of life to the Athena Widgets.)
-
- The small essentials:
- pixmap (For colour icons.)
- xmessage (A million and one uses.)
- xselection (Just as many.)
- xse (The possibilities are endless.)
- xdu (Save some disk space, the interactive way.)
-
- Local hacks:
- runx (Local version of "startx" script.)
- rx (Local version of "xon" program - based on old gwm script.)
