  14. I've been working on getting printer accounting working on some of my
  15. departments machines.  Right now, I'm stuck on an DecStation 5000 running
  16. Ultrix 4.2 (rev 96).

  18. The problem that I'm having is finding a accouting filter (if in /etc/printcap)
  19. that is smart enough to deal with postscript that is being printed via a 
  20. serial line to an Apple Laserwriter.

  22. I've tried using ln03rof and found that on my machine it will print normal
  23. text files (and record an accurate page count).  But for postscript files
  24. it will print them while silently skipping writing an accounting record.

  26. This is the case if I set Da=ascii or postscript.

  28. The other filter that I've tried is lpf which seems to just count the
  29. number of lines in a postscript file and change in that way, rather
  30. than find out (in some smart way) how many pages were actually
  31. printed.  On a sample one page text file , the filter recorded two
  32. pages as printed.  For an 11 page printout of a postscript file with
  33. 875 lines, it reported 15 pages printed....

  35. Has anyone else out there found a better printer filter or can tell me which
  36. filter I should be using...the state of our documentation is pathetic.
