-
- There have been several followup posts to this. At least one reflected
- our (the Dell UNIX development group's) initial misunderstanding of the
- GNU license. We thought it was sufficient to make our modifications to
- the GNU programs publicly available (via uucp and ftp). We did not
- understand that the license requires us to act as a distributor of the
- GNU programs (caveat: I don't know that Dell's lawyers agree to this
- interpretation, but the UNIX development group doesn't really care).
-
- Our solution will be to include the sources for most public domain programs
- we ship with Dell UNIX Issue 2.2 (this does not include the X sources).
- For current customers of Dell UNIX (purchasers of Issue 2.0 and 2.1), the
- "nominal" fee allowed by FSF is the fee to upgrade. In practice, the price
- for a separate tape with just the public domain sources would be more than
- that required for the upgrade.
-
- Until Dell UNIX Issue 2.2 is available, we probably (<- keeping the lawyers
- happy) are not compliant with the GNU license. Richard Stallman and the FSF
- are aware of this (maybe not that we're still non-compliant, but that we will
- be non-compliant until Issue 2.2 is available).
- -
- I, and I alone, speak for Dell. Michael and the rest of them are my puppets.
- And if you believe that, you deserve the consequences of your actions ...
