- Hi, everyone,
-
- I would really appreciate if somebody could help me out of this.
-
- My RS6000 (with AIX 3.1.3) has two hard disks; one (hdisk0) is internal with
- 320 MB, and the other one (hdisk1) is external with 1 GB. Recently, I tried to
- do the following things by running the program 'smit', and now I know it was
- stupid:
-
- 1. make a backup of /usr, named /u/usrB. (/u is in hdisk1.)
- 2. make a copy of /usr in the logical volume /usr0. (/usr0 is in hdisk1.)
- 3. rename the logical volume /usr to /usr.orig.
- (when I was trying to do this, smit told me the execution failed. But,
- still, it did something that I don't know. Everything started to get
- messed up since then.)
- 4. change the characteristic of /usr.orig by setting 'automatically mounted
- when system restarts' to NO.
- 5. change the mount point of /usr0 to /usr.
- 6. reboot the system but it was never successful.
-
- Worse thing is that I don't have the three floppies 'bosboot', 'display', and
- 'insatll/maintenance'. I borrowed the three for another RS600 with different
- configuration. Then I used these floppies to reboot my RS6000. Now, again, I
- can run 'smit', but:
-
- A. it never recognized the terminal type even after I tried
- 'export TERM=hft'.
- B. when I 'list the contents of a physical volume' of hdisk0, it seemed
- that the space of original /usr has been freed.
- C. when I 'list all the file systems', /usr no longer exists.
- D. when I 'list the contents of a physical volume' of hdisk1, It gave me
- lots of question marks and said I need to run 'varyonvg'.
-
- So, any suggestion? I am able to reinstall the operating system, but, does
- anyone know if I can recover all the files in hdisk1?
- Any response to my problem is highly appreciated. Thank you very much.
