- Hello out there,
-
- this is sort of a SOS to the world...
- I started a new job this monday in prof. business.
- There is a RS6000 running AIX3.1.5 as VERY CENTRAL machine. A second was
- bought, but it had AIX3.2. This company needs old AIX, so I tried to
- copy the 3.1.5 to the new machine. Since SMIT doesnt make bootable installable
- Backup, i tried another way: (which started the chaos)
- bosboot.
- This program SHOULD create a bootable media on e.g. Tape or Floppy.
- so I typed : bosboot -d /dev/rmt0 -a
- The program created the boot image, but then showed following err msg:
- "Couldn't open /tmp/bos.xxx" (forgot the xxx)
- It exited to shell, which was still functioning, all filesystems were
- ok at that moment. I did shut the machine down. (That was a horrible mistake)
- The shutdown went thru as usual.
-
- AFTER THAT, THE MACHINE DIDNT EVER AGAIN boot from disk (it still boots from
- tape or floppy) (Floppy: Diagnostic disks, Tape: AIX3.2 mksysb)
-
- Worst of all: there is NO backup of the hard disk except raw user data and
- every non-operative workday WILL cost my job...
- I'm quite sure the data still IS on the disk, except for some essential
- booting info (such as bootblock?!)
-
- IS THERE ANYONE who can help? THIS WEEKEND?? I'm desperate!!
- Write mail, call me +49 221 322422, +49 221 92404-132
- (I will call back immediately, regardless of country)
-
- Feeling quite down, Henning (hstams@biolan.uni-koeln.de)
