  11. I believe I'm on to a problem with the verify flag on dump.  (Yes, I
  12. know I can't verify / or /var; it's something different.)

  14. When we try adding 'v' to our dump options the following seems to
  15. happen.  The tape writes, verify begins and (like write has previously
  16. done) reports a certain percentage complete.  We finally get a message 
  17. like "Verify 98% completed...finished in 1 minute" (or some such).  At 
  18. this point the tape keeps moving and we don't get a prompt for a long
  19. time (up to a couple of hours sometimes).

  21. Occassionally the prompt comes back with no error (especially on the
  22. 1/4" cartridge device) but often we get an error like "st1: unit busy
  23. too long" (especially on the exabyte device).  This morning the screen
  24. was filled with "Do you want to rewrite? (Y or N)".

  26. Is there something wrong with verify ('v' option to dump) or some
  27. trick to making it run to completion properly.  Is it simply that it
  28. forces itself to read to the full extent of those silly numbers we
  29. give dump and reading blank tape for a long time causes occassional
  30. errors?

  32. Anyone else using verify?  (It seems like a good idea on unattended backups
  33. which can fit on one tape.)
