  13. We are looking for assistance with SCSI errors we've been having.
  14. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  16. CONFIGURATION:

  18. Sparc 1, 32M ram, 24 bit video, internal 424M seagate drive (sd0), 
  19. external 1.4G seagate drive (sd1), exabyte tape drive (st1).
  20. SunOS Release 4.1.2 (GENERIC) #2: Wed Oct 23 10:52:58 PDT 1991
  21. Version 1.0 roms.

  23. PROBLEMS:

  25. 2 problems with the SCSI bus.
  26.  
  27. First problem occurs on power up (all other devices already on),
  28. about 25% of the time the first message that appears is
  29. 'SCSI hung - perhaps an external device is off', then it does its
  30. testing then we get the > prompt (typing 'n' then 'reset' always
  31. enables the maching to boot up).

  33. The second problem occurs when trying to use the exabyte drive.  We
  34. continuously get 'write error' at random places into the tape.

  36. HISTORY:

  38. We started with a diskless ss1 and upgraded it to become our server
  39. (to 3 other diskless clients some macs and some pcs).  We added the
  40. two drives and the exabyte, installed 4.1.2.  Then everything worked
  41. fine for two months.  We were doing daily backups (weekend level 0) for
  42. the last one of the two months without any problems.  Then without
  43. changing anything (except copying over a very large - 400M - directory)
  44. we started getting write errors and the following SCSI transport error.

  53. ATTEMPED SOLUTIONS:

  55. * All the external devices work on a Sparc 2 (several tests) running 4.1.2.
  56.  
  57. * Tried many different tapes (Exabyte and Sony) - same errors
  58.  
  59. * Got a replacement for the Exabyte - same errors
  60.  
  61. * Tried replacing the 424M internal drive - same errors (then returned drive)
  62.  
  63. * Swapped the mother board with another from a ss1 - same errors
  64.  
  65. Then we were told a ssp wasn't rated to power a 424M drive so we bought
  66. an external shoebox.  That still did not fix the problem. We've had several
  67. people look at it (including two authorized sun technicians) without success.

  69. The system runs fine - all software works - but we can't do backups or tars
  70. and we get the SCSI transport errors.
