- | We push the limit on SCSI cable lengths and consequently see a fair number
- | of SCSI errors. We've been trying to nail down as accurately as possible
- | what the usable SCSI bus length is. The January/February issue of Pipeline
- | says "On a Personal IRIS or Magnum system, the internal SCSI cables are
- | approximately 8 feet long, ..." (Adding a SCSI Peripheral to an IRIS
- | System, pg. 12). Is this a correct figure? How long is the SCSI cabling
- | inside other boxes, such as an Expansion Cabinet, an Indigo, and a Crimson?
-
- 8 feet is worst case, or it may be the sum of a PI and a Personal File
- (PI chassis, but just for up to 4 drive modules). The worst case length
- was some of the early PI's at just over 5 feet of cable internally.
-
- | We've also seen bad SCSI cables. On one of our systems, swapping SCSI
- | cables of the same length but different vendor completely solved a
- | not-so-intermittent parity error on the SCSI bus. A cable-tester showed no
- | connectivity problems in the bad cable. Are there any reliable ways to
- | tell a good SCSI cable from a bad SCSI cable?
-
- You could use a TDR to do some checking. Also watch out for the
- wrong gauge wires, or not bothering to connect all the ground wires.
-
- Finally, for cables that are twisted pair, the folks doing the SCSI
- specs did some testing, and found that certain cable designs (certain
- pairs in the center) would work better than others, for reasons that
- escape me at the moment.
