  13. Some days ago I asked about the feasibility of getting both a
  14. dials+buttons and stereo viewer working on a 4d/310.
  15. The complications were that:
  16. 1. Both devices need a power supply as well as serial line
  17. signals.
  18. 2. SGI have, apparently, sold two kinds of d+b box. One had a
  19. seperate power supply, the other expected to get its power
  20. from the extra line brought to the front of the 4d/310 through
  21. the din-8 plug (not present on db-9 connectors).
  22. SGI had delivered a d+b box to us which did not have a
  23. seperate power supply.
  24. 3. The owners guide says that only the first two (of four)
  25. serial ports carry any signals.
  26. 4. Both devices need power, but only one of the first of the
  27. two serial ports has the din-8 plug with the extra power.

  29. The cure was found by luck, not knowledge.
  30. a) stick the d+b box on com2 using the din-8 connector.
  31. b) Now how to get both power and signal to the stereo viewer ?
  32. The manual clearly states
  33. "Single processor systems support... two 9-pin D-sub serial
  34. connectors and *one* 8-pin DIN connector; signal is not
  35. provided to connector pairs 3 and 4."
  36. Despite me reading the manual to SGI, the Zurich men insisted
  37. on plugging the stereo viewer into the DIN-8 plug on com3.
  38. To my surprise, the thing worked.

  40. Explanation ?
  41. I asked the men and they theorised that although the standard
  42. serial lines might not be wired up on com3, the power and
  43. stereo sync lines were.
  44. Witchcraft, but it did work.

  46. Thanks to the people who posted/mailed suggestions about power
  47. packs, bifurcated cables and so on.
