  17. Algorithm:
  18. USDebtWatch displays an estimate of the national debt of the United
  19. States of America. The estimate is updated at a regular interval
  20. specified by the user. Debt computation routines are taken from Jamie
  21. Zawinski's xdebt. The debt estimate is derived from the 1989 Survey of
  22. Current Business (SCB '89). It assumes a starting figure of
  23. $2,707,284,000,000 as of December 31, 1988, with a linear rate of
  24. increase of $7673.015 per second. Although the result looks horrifying
  25. enough as is, it is certainly an obsolete underestimate. If you know of
  26. a more recent and/or accurate algorithm for estimating the national
  27. debt, please send me email. I used a FormCell, so it would be easy to
  28. upgrade the program to simultaneously display the results of more than
  29. one estimate.

  33. The icon is intended to depict Lady Liberty being crushed by the burden
  34. of a heavy debt portfolio. I am not an artist; otherwise, I would have
  35. done a better job.
