- Greetings:
-
- We are deciding what printers to get for our NeXT system. We expect
- to have a lot of concurrent printing requests and wonder about using 4
- of our Turbos (of an estimated 20 Turbos) to connect to 1 NeXT Laser
- each (for a total of 4 printers). If students are allowed to print to
- any of the lasers can we expect slowdowns on those 3-4 Turbos which
- are connecting the laser? We cannot dedicate any Turbos solely to
- printing as we have a large population of users. Besides only 1 NeXT
- Laser can be used per Turbo. We do not want to use our servers (Cubes) for
- printing because not only do we think they will be overtaxed but there is
- a distance limitation involved in hooking up the NeXT Lasers.
-
- I have it from a good source that if we have 16Mb RAM we should be ok
- for those individual Turbos. Just wondering if anyone has seen this
- in practice? Would more RAM help? How much more?
-
- The other alternative is to go for non NeXT printers which handle the
- processing themselves. We can route the information to be processed
- by these printers via ethernet. The problem would seem to be one of cost.
- For example we can probably get 4 NeXT Lasers (8 ppm) for the cost of
- 1 QMS Laser (17 ppm).
-
- I welcome all comments. Please expound all knowledge :-). Correct me if
- any of this information is incorrect.
-
- Thanks,
- Steve
