  17. Firstly, sorry about last week's chart.  I inadvertently transposed two of
  18. the column headings, and much confusion resulted.

  20. And now, on with the show...
  21.  
  22. Last week, Aldus jumped straight in at number one.  This week, they're
  23. proving that it's not just a one-off, capturing the number two slot.  Let's
  24. see if they can go for the hat trick!

  26. The spreadsheet wars take their first casualty:  Poor old Lotus 123 has
  27. dropped out of the chart, booted out by Microsoft's Excel.  A superior
  28. rip-off from Bill Gates and his crew.  However, Microsoft's position is
  29. precarious at number ten.

  57. Hmm.  Given that they're also at number four in the rip-offs chart, perhaps
  58. they should make up their minds what their policy is.  If Resolve can be sold
  59. for virtually the same price in the US and UK, why can't MacDraw Pro?  It
  60. rather demolishes the argument that there's a good reason for the price
  61. differences, doesn't it?

  63. For those wondering how this stuff is calculated:
  64. UK RRP in $ = UK RRP in pounds * exchange rate
  65. Rip-off %ge = (UK RRP in $ / US RRP in $ - 1) * 100

  67. That is, for a rip-off percentage of 50%, the UK price is 1.50 times the US
  68. price when both are written in the same currency.  The table's generated by a
  69. Hypercard stack, so if anything's wrong with the maths it should be
  70. consistently wrong. :-)

  72. Since I'm a sporting chap, I use the tourist exchange rates -- the rates you
  73. or I would get if we walked into a bank and asked to change some currency.
  74. Rates are obtained from BBC teletext on the day I post the article.  Also, to
  75. be scrupulously fair, all prices are quoted without tax.

  77. Finally, for those still confused, RRP stands for Recommended Retail Price.  I
  78. gather they're called Manufacturer's Recommended Retail Prices or something
  79. similar in the USA.  If you compare street prices, you get even bigger
  80. percentages.

  82. Crippleware is software deliberately crippled to force the user to pay more
  83. money.  If anyone wants to try un-crippling AutoDoubler, I've been given a
  84. rumoured low-down on how to do it by someone who wishes to remain anonymous.
