- There's been a lot of speculation about this recently on the net. Just
- read a story in the 7/13 issue of MacWeek which might be of interest.
- The following implies that Apple is not just "dumping" inventory at
- Price Club, but testing the waters for a low cost system. From what
- people are saying, sounds like they are selling well. Maybe that will
- be good news for those of us looking for low-cost mac notebooks in the
- future.

- "PowerBook 100 to join Price Club
- by Andrew Gore
- MacWeek, 7/13/92
-
- Apple is giving the Macintosh PowerBook 100 a second chance to
- improve its 'also ran' reputation by turning to mass-market
- distribution.
-
- Apple said the PowerBook 100, configured with 4MB RAM, a 40MB hard
- drive and external floppy, soon will be sold exclusively through
- the San Diego based Price Club as part of Apple's efforts to test
- the consumer electronics channels.
-
- The $2,399 unit is being dropped from the Apple authorized dealer
- price list. In the next few weeks the 4/40 will start appearing
- on Price Club shelves, where it could sell for as little as $900,
- sources said. No end date has been set for Price Club's PowerBook
- test.
-
- The 100 has had, by far, the lowest unit sales of Apple's PowerBook
- line, souces said. The company hopes its low end notebook will do
- better in consumer-electronics channels, where price is sometimes a
- a stronger buying criterion than power.
-
- Other PowerBook 100 models will continue to be sold through dealer
- channels."
