- You intend to return? US customs will gleefully impose duty on all your
- expensive gear, perhaps even in spite of those receipts.
-
- Luckily, there is a registration procedure which you should use *before*
- you leave the US. You should prepare a list of all serial #'s, of all
- equipment (camera, lenses, Mac CPU, keyboard, mouse, monitor, external
- HD...), and Customs will have forms for you to transfer the information to.
- They may also desire to inspect the serial numbers, so be sure the
- packaging is openable. If you begin your trip at an airport which lacks a
- customs facility, you might do well to obtain some blank forms ahead of
- time, so that they can be processed with a minimum of time at your flight
- change.
-
- I nearly got burned on my return from London in 1984 (camera gear),
- luckily, I had prepared myself (no, was never a boyscout, just a longtime
- acquaintance of murphy).
