- Cyrix has announced a "486 SLC" chip that it claims to be pin
- compatible with certain 386 SX packages that are found in some 386 SX
- based notebook machines. The announced chip claims to have a 1 Kbyte
- cache and somewhat faster instruction processing over the 386 SX.
-
- I was wondering if any of you folks have tried replacing a notebook
- 386 SX with the new chip. What were the results?
-
- Things to watch for:
-
- * Timing faults (BIOS may have built-in timing loops that run too
- fast with the new chip)
-
- * Power consumption problems (battery life degradation, excess heat)
-
- * Unexpected difficulty with mechanical aspects of chip replacement
-
- * Only works with certain external oscillator frequencies (I am
- thinking about 16 MHz systems in particular)
-
- * Incompatibility with 387 SX coprocessor operation
-
- By the way, does anyone have the phone number for Cyrix? They may
- have more detailed information about this along with pricing and
- ordering specifics.
