  13. Cyrix has announced a "486 SLC" chip that it claims to be pin
  14. compatible with certain 386 SX packages that are found in some 386 SX
  15. based notebook machines.  The announced chip claims to have a 1 Kbyte
  16. cache and somewhat faster instruction processing over the 386 SX.
  17.  
  18. I was wondering if any of you folks have tried replacing a notebook
  19. 386 SX with the new chip.  What were the results?

  21. Things to watch for:
  22.  
  23. * Timing faults (BIOS may have built-in timing loops that run too
  24. fast with the new chip)
  25.  
  26. * Power consumption problems (battery life degradation, excess heat)
  27.  
  28. * Unexpected difficulty with mechanical aspects of chip replacement
  29.  
  30. * Only works with certain external oscillator frequencies (I am
  31. thinking about 16 MHz systems in particular)
  32.  
  33. * Incompatibility with 387 SX coprocessor operation
  34.  
  35. By the way, does anyone have the phone number for Cyrix?  They may
  36. have more detailed information about this along with pricing and
  37. ordering specifics.
