- I wouldn't fault Gateway too much on this point. They also state
- explicitly that they use the C & T single module processor, which I did
- vaguely remember was a souped-up XT (8088). It does have 286-like speed --
- I think they said the SI rating was around 12, which makes it like a 10Mhz 286.
- They are explicitly not marketing the Handbook as Window-capable. But they say
- that they are working with C & T to get a protected-mode CPU going in the
- same or similar form-factor so that future Handbooks could run Windows in
- standard mode.
- It looks like there will be a flood of these subnotebook computers out
- shortly, so I think I'll just wait for a little longer. The Handbook has most
- everything right that I want except this no protected mode business. It also
- seems a little pricey, given what it is. I think it should be priced under
- $1000.
- The Dell 320SLi is pretty attractive at $2149 for a 386 with VGA,
- weighing 3.5 pounds. I wish it would weigh less.
- The new Zeos Pocket PC has the right idea, at 1.3 pounds. But it is
- only CGA and has no hard disk. Still, it may have some merits and should put
- Poqet out of business, although the Poqet is a little smaller, its keyboard
- is thus untype-able and it cost nearly twice what the Zeos costs.
- Does anyone know about other <<4lbs subnotebooks coming out that are
- worth waiting for ? What is the story with the Phoenix Companion ?
