-
- There are several upgradable motherboards on the market. Each one of them
- has there own particular designs that make them unique and desirable.
-
- They range in implementation : Passive backplane upgradable systems occupy
- a special 32 bit slot that talks to the "local bus". AST, and several other
- manafucturers use this technology.
-
- A Modular Processor : A processor and supporting ciruitry is packaged on a
- card that has connectors that tie into the "local bus" of the AT. The
- supporting chipsets needed to support the x86 processor are on the card.
- This alllows a 386 to be upgraded to a 486 by removing the processor module
- and replacing the BIOS.
-
- OVERDRIVE SOCKET: Some newer motherboards are coming out with a soldered
- 486SX processor on-board and a overdrive socket. The overdrive socket
- when occupied signals the 486SX processor to shutdown. While the overdrive
- socket is filled the 486SX is brain dead. Some jumpers may need to be
- changed in earlier revs of the motherboards that do this. This will change
- as the flash rom and other technologies develop.
