- Instead of the NEC CD-ROM drive & NEC CD-ROM SCSI interface that I have on
- my machine at work, I'm considering (for home purchase) buying an Adaptec
- 1542B as my SCSI controller for home (thus allowing me to upgrade to fairly
- high-speed SCSI hard drives at a later time), and hooking the NEC CD-ROM
- (either a 73/74 or 83/84 model) drive up to that.
-
- However, since I've only hooked up a NEC CD-ROM drive to a NEC SCSI
- controller, I've a few questions (some of them fairly high on the ignoramus
- scale):
-
- * Drivers: the NEC SCSI interface card comes with drivers for the NEC
- CD-ROM drives (along with MSCDEX, but I can get that elsewhere.) To get
- the NEC CD-ROM drive to work with the Adaptec card (under DOS or
- Windows/DOS, and not Windows NT), are there drivers available? Are they
- shipped with the Adaptec? Or can I use the NEC CD-ROM drivers that come
- with the NEC SCSI interface card?
-
- * One other question: I see that both the Soundblaster sound cards and the
- MediaVision soundcards have the ability to hook up a CD-ROM player
- to the soundcard. (In the case of the MediaVision, it's a SCSI
- interface; SoundBlaster's is proprietery, I understand.) Is there any
- major advantage to having the CD-ROM drive hooked up directly to the
- soundcard (for sound applications), as opposed to the soundcard
- accessing the CD-ROM through a seperate SCSI interface (e.g., the
- Adaptec?)
-
- I would appreciate any information (not to mention opinions on my
- configuration ideas) that you can provide. If you'd care to e-mail me your
- responses, I'd be happy to summarize them to this newsgroup in a couple of
- weeks.
-
- Thanks in advance,
