- Diamond and Orchid are about to release new S3 based boards that have
- a 640x480x24bit mode. I was told by the respective companies that
- these boards will both be shipping in August (which means you'll probably
- be able to buy one in Sept.). The prices will be about the same as
- the current S3 models.
-
- Diamond is also releasing a new bard called the Speedstar 24X. It will
- be based on the Western Digital (Paradise) chipset and will incorporate
- the WD 9031 GUI accelerator chip. It will have hardware bitblt,
- a hardware 8x8 pattern fill, and a hardware cursor (but no linedraw).
- It will use DRAM and be capable of 640x480x24bit, 800x600x15bit (60hz),
- 1024x768x8bit (at 70 hz) and 1280x[960,1024]x4bit modes (interlaced).
- It will come with some imaging software from Halo as well as some
- desktop thing called "birdseye" from Panacea. You should be able
- to buy one next month. It will not cost much more than the current
- Speedstar 24.
-
- The thing that concerns me is that two boards that are so similar yet
- so different costing about the same with similar names will make it
- impossible for the add copy writers for the mail order houses to get
- their adds straight. You'll see something like,
-
- "Diamond Speedstar 24 hicolor SVGA graphics accelerator card......$199"
-
- There's definitely an art to reading adds and figuring out what they
- meat to say.
