  13.     Having Low Level formatted, partitioned, and High level formatted
  14. many hard drives (mostly MFM and a few RLL) it seems that frequently
  15. my hard drives function well with one controller yet not with another (of the
  16. same recording method of course).

  18.     It has been my frequent experience that a hard drive
  19. will go through the formatting process fine on one controller after having
  20. appeared to be faulty and incapable of accepting low level formatting on 
  21. another controller. I would have given up on many drives that ultimately 
  22. proved good and reliable. I would have declared them faulty if I had not had 
  23. another controller to try.

  25.     Also, after formatting and running completely without problems
  26. using one controller, I often have tried to swap the controller and then
  27. failed to be able to boot using the new controller. It almost seems that
  28. everything from low level format on up must have been done on the controller
  29. to be used with a drive. This is not universally true in my experience --
  30. sometimes different controllers appear to work equally well with a given
  31. hard drive. But I never feel comfortable with changing a controller without 
  32. re-doing the low level format on the drive using the changed controller.

  34.     I am curious about how closely my experience matches that of others. 
  35. Have you found most drives to be picky about the controller they work with? 
  36. That sure seems to be so with me.
