- Having Low Level formatted, partitioned, and High level formatted
- many hard drives (mostly MFM and a few RLL) it seems that frequently
- my hard drives function well with one controller yet not with another (of the
- same recording method of course).
-
- It has been my frequent experience that a hard drive
- will go through the formatting process fine on one controller after having
- appeared to be faulty and incapable of accepting low level formatting on
- another controller. I would have given up on many drives that ultimately
- proved good and reliable. I would have declared them faulty if I had not had
- another controller to try.
-
- Also, after formatting and running completely without problems
- using one controller, I often have tried to swap the controller and then
- failed to be able to boot using the new controller. It almost seems that
- everything from low level format on up must have been done on the controller
- to be used with a drive. This is not universally true in my experience --
- sometimes different controllers appear to work equally well with a given
- hard drive. But I never feel comfortable with changing a controller without
- re-doing the low level format on the drive using the changed controller.
-
- I am curious about how closely my experience matches that of others.
- Have you found most drives to be picky about the controller they work with?
- That sure seems to be so with me.
-
- Thanks
